Tuesday 9/27: Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes

curricular goals

Goal 1: Learners will design and conduct investigations to demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry. NCSCOS: 1.01, 1.05, 1.08, 1.09, 1.10

Goal 4: Learners will conduct investigations and utilize technology and information systems to build an understanding of chemistry. NCSCOS: 4.02, 4.04, 4.05, 4.06

warm-up

Forensic chemistry is a field of chemistry dedicated to the chemical analysis of matter that may have been used in a crime.

in-class activities

1) CSI Lab: Mystery Powders

Forensic chemists examine fluids and other matter found at a crime scene or in/on the bodies of suspects and victims. They must be familiar with the physical and chemical properties of matter, as well as various technologies used to examine and analyze matter, such as: ultraviolet light, infrared, x-ray, microscopes, chromatography and DNA analysis. They also examine matter using: odor, texture, solubility, flammability and malleability. Their findings are often used in police investigations and court cases to find those guilty or innocent of a crime.

homework

1) Reading: Holt text: pgs. 166 - 171. Chemical Properties (Due Tomorrow)

2) Quiz coming Thursday

3) Notebook check this Friday

Wednesday 9/28: Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes

curricular goals

Goal 1: Learners will design and conduct investigations to demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry. NCSCOS: 1.01, 1.05, 1.08, 1.09, 1.10

Goal 4: Learners will conduct investigations and utilize technology and information systems to build an understanding of chemistry. NCSCOS: 4.02, 4.04, 4.05, 4.06

warm-up

Most often, forensic chemists do not know the nature of the sample before they analyze it. The results of their work are used in police investigations and court trials.
